Ancient Egyptian Underworld

According to the definition that Egyptian had about the underworld, it would mean that after a person dies then he goes in a very dark place which they referred to as the underworld.

The Ancient Egyptian underworld was also known as the Duat. Duat was a land of full of innumerable dangers and it was believed that every person will have to at some point or the other pass through this. And this would happen after death.

The religious belief

The religious belief among the ancient Egyptians' about the ancient Egyptian underworld was quite complicated. It meant that if someone understood this world, that is when he will also understand properly the different elements of their beliefs and religion. The earlier Egyptians were very particular about the religion and this was something that was very close to everyone's heart.

Every aspect of life was in some manner or other touched by religion. Religion did play a role in everyone's life. The Egyptian gods and goddesses were given a lot of respect. People in those days lived in the fear of the evil and believed that not praying and worshipping god lead to evil spirits haunting them.

Some of the gods were assumed that they took care of the realms of daily life and there were some gods that took care of things related to after the death of a person.

Meaning of death

According to the Ancient Egyptian underworld's belief every person had 3 souls, namely the Ka, the ba and the akh.

The Ka was like a duplicate of the body. It was based on the understanding that without the existence of the body, no soul can stay.

The Ba was something that was never able to leave the tom. This is how the spirits haunt the people.

The Akh was the immoral soul. This emerged only when the Ka and the Ba would unite.

The belief extended to what they had in mind, which was, that all the elements of the soul were perishable and that it does not stay forever. Thus there is a lot fo risk that is involved.

From the belief that these people had, came the concept that they followed, that is of mummification. Egyptians' believed that preserving of the human body was something that was very important. It is only the body that will keep the soul of the person alive because they believed that the soul cannot exist without the body.

Thus in order not to make the soul of the person restless and so that it has a place to stay, it was important for the soul to have a body.
